Losing Our Roots: The Disappearing Legacy of Heritage America

I recently began analyzing U.S. demographic shifts in relation to the number of young adult Americans who descend from Revolutionary War Patriots. While I have dabbled in this field before, I recently had the time to truly delve into the subject. Although I still have much more to examine, the data I uncovered is incredibly alarming.


I have never believed more than I do at this moment that all immigration must be halted immediately. Over the past 200 years, the percentage of young adults aged 18 to 25 who descend from a Patriot has plummeted from 75% to just 2% of that demographic. In 1826, 75% of young adults descended from at least one person who supported the Patriot cause, either through military service or civil support. Due to a boom in immigration from the 1840s through the 1860s, the percentage of 18- to 25-year-old Americans who descended from a Patriot in 1876 dropped to 35% of that age group. By 1926, the proportion of young adults in that same age bracket dropped sharply to 15%, driven by the massive wave of Ellis Island immigrants who had entered the country over the previous three decades.


Following the passage of the Hart-Celler Act in 1965, the share of Patriot descendants in this age bracket saw a dramatic decline to its current 2% proportion. This severe demographic dilution of young adults who descend from Patriots has fundamentally altered our nation's core cultural fabric, resulting in an increasingly unrecognizable landscape. When the generation tasked with inheriting a nation retains virtually no ancestral connection to its founding, the continuity of its foundational principles is placed in extreme risk. Without a demographic anchor tied directly to the nation's origin, the collective memory that once unified the republic faces unprecedented fragmentation.
