Picture

Surrounded by the still bayou,
And the cypress trees
Full of croaking frogs,
The tall, agèd oak behind
With the rope tied up high
For cousin Rob to swing out
O’er the steeply sloping yard,
The boathouse down below
From which we launched many a time
The old fishin’ boat
With its well-worn wooden paddle,
Uncle Art in its upper room
Busy with his ingenious works
Of craftsmanship:
Planes, submarines, and trains,
In the midst there lies
The little two-story house
And inside the spiral metal staircase
In the sunny living room
And the swinging doors
Leading to the cozy kitchen –
All of this you made into a home
With your love as wife and as mother
And most of all with the love of Christ.
How many experienced it along with me,
Your sweet smile and cheerful laugh
Chasing away the coldness of the world?
The home on Bayou Bartholomew
Resting in the twilight
In the gloaming of the setting sun,
There will I always see you,
There may I meet you
After the Resurrection of our Lord
When the earth and all that is therein
Shall be renewed in glory.

A lovely composition. It triggered fond recollections of family members who have transitioned to eternal life. If ever a people needed poetry that directed our minds to the first things, it is America today.
