It does not do to be too sympathetic to Muslims. They fight among themselves, seldom help their co-religionists, and (like Americans) are often betrayed by their own leaders. They harbour strong elements of murderous jihad and abominable sharia. Yet there are many millions of them, they occupy a large swath of the earth’s surface, and their tainted religion does encourage decent behaviour and peace among a lot of otherwise primitive people. In normal times, they would be U.S. friendly (as they used to be) and happily sell us their oil, without bothering us much. But for more than a half century they have been the victims of serious injury by the U.S. establishment. In Palestine they have been invaded and occupied by foreigners, had their land ruthlessly stolen, been herded into camps, and become second-class inhabitants in a land that has been theirs for centuries. And the invader has harmed the ancient community of Palestinian Christians as badly as the Muslims. “Terrorism,” though ugly war against the innocent, is a natural response of the weak facing overwhelming power. An overwhelming Israeli power massively subsidized by the U.S. state which for decades has provided Israel with more support than all other countries put together, including the best weapons. In that circumstance, Hamas takes on the character of the resistance of an occupied people. Now, in response to a military attack, the Palestinians are being driven from their homes and subjected to a massacre of women and children. Is this war, or simply war used as an excuse for something long desired by the ruling power? Can any decent American doubt that this an evil thing for which we ought to expect the wages of sin? Can any decent American fail to condemn the suffering on the innocent? A few lonely American voices who have questioned our position have been quickly silenced. Our establishment is callously, and sometimes in a celebratory mode, cheering on this evil. What ever happened to what so many thought of as our benevolent national character and sympathy for the underdog? The Republicans are the worst of all. They complain about Palestinians protesting on our own soil, although they have abetted mass immigration for decades. The newly-elected Republican leader in the House of Representatives says that he is supporting Israel because he is a Christian. Intelligent people who want to can cause a lot of evil. But we should remember that stupid people are capable of terrible evil also without even knowing what they are doing. Mr. Lovett has provided us with useful commentary on this site on the situation, including suggestions for reading. I can add that there in fact quite a few movies sympathetic to the occupied Palestinians, usually made by Europeans. I’ll suggest two that have moved me. They came out around 2008 before the current troubles. Neither is the least shrill or militant. They are quiet and gentle in portraying the life of occupied Palestinians. Laila’s Birthday might be called “A Day in the Life of a Palestinian.” A taxi driver, struggling for a living in an occupation well below his educational level, is trying to find a gift and a cake for his daughter’s birthday. In addition to the normal problems of daily life, he faces the normal abnormal realities of explosions, checkpoints, and routine humiliation. His experience is almost a classic odyssey. The Lemon Tree, based on a real event, is a poignant account of the tribulations of a Palestinian woman. Her lemon tree, her only inheritance and living, is targeted for destruction by the Israeli army, who declare it a threat to “state security” because it blocks a short section of their view. The victimised lead character is a Palestinian lady. She has a maturely beautiful and subtly expressive face such as we associate with great actresses. No civilised human can fail to be moved.

We must remember that Hamas was actually funded by Israel and the U.S. government aids and abettes Islam. It has done so for decades.

“But we should remember that stupid people are capable of terrible evil also without even knowing what they are doing.” Well, brother Wilson: Let me give a BIG AMEN to that!

With the Republican Party it is often difficult to distinguish between deliberate evil and stupidity. I suppose the recent selection of the Speaker combines both.

I just saw that Senator Tuberville made some intelligent comments about Putin, Zelensky and the Ukraine conflict. True to form, Senator Graham jumped in to remind everyone that such thinking was not at all mainstream Republican thinking, then he went on to prove yet again by his comments that historical ignorance, false bravado, military cluelessness and good old-fashioned stupidity were the foundations of GOP policy.

Yes, Ukraine is a terrible scam. The American Uniparty, in a monstrously evil & stupid("bipartisan") way even for them, is doing the worst things for the worst reasons. Ukraine has easily overtaken Israel on the foreign aid dole. Most of the Israel aid is basically recycled back into the American economy- if for no other reason than the fact Israel is totally dependent on the United States. God only knows where most of Ukraine's aid goes. &- whether you agree with foreign aid to Israel or anybody else- the Israel aid isn't fueling the possibility of a world(ending) war between the world's great powers

The idea of the Palestinians/Muslims by&large as innocent(enough):victims is ridiculously simplistic. Yes, Israel is very, very far from perfect with influence on American politics that outweighs its importance. Israel might also be more an ethnocracy than liberal democracy(although it looks like Norway compared to the brutish kleptocrats that to this day dominate almost every Arab nation- admittedly the fact America props up many of the Arab dictatorships complicates the matter too). & perhaps it would've been better to give give European Jews a piece of Germany(or Poland or some European no man's land) after WW2, what's done is done though. All that said Israel, for all its faults, is an outpost of Western civilization(granted many would say colonialism) on top of what for centuries has been an unstable hotbed of international hooliganism & fanaticism. The Palestinian cause has probably got more (positive)international attention than any nationalist movement in history- including now among a huge number of (overwhelming young & college educated i.e. the future powerholding) Americans. Certainly not a "few lonely voices"- & while institutional American power is still overwhelming Pro-Israel even younger Evangelicals are beginning to side with the Palestinian cause in significant numbers. Certainly much more explicit support than innocent white Christians like the police in numerous Black criminal/white cop ever got. The people that champion the Palestinian cause most explicitly- AOC, Omar, Talib etc- make absolutely no secret that they hate the traditional American nation & that they see Israel as the modern extention of the white colonialism that created America. Palestinians/Arabs/Muslims- both foreign & American- have, generally, this same mindset toward the West, including traditional Western values like free speech, religious freedom etc. Instead of romantic movie versions of Palestine look honestly at the historic & current realities & cimpare it with Israel- what society better reflects American/Western/civilized human values?

Excellent point, Dr. Wilson! Greed is a foundational principle with the GOP. It's their cheap substitute for wisdom.

It is utterly silly for any southern nationalist to support the American empire, this is the empire that came into existence by the consolidated, unitary state that the union victory in the civil war created. It's the same empire that defames and slanders your ancestors as criminals, racists and traitors, and wants them to cease to exist. Yet these same people demand southerners shed blood and risk their lives for their foreign wars, and are perfectly fine with nationalism as long as it's adhered to by a certain country with a white and blue flag. They are evil, and they are hypocrites. It is perfectly logical and consistent for southern patriots to be anti zionist, as it is tied at the ankle with the yankee empire, simple as that.

Criticism of Israel is good, but of course I have no sympathy for the likes of Louis Farrakhan, David Irving, Amy Goodman, the Nation of Islam, Black Nationalist Goons, the Yankee alt-right, the foreign jackals in Congress or the post Marxist college professors.
